As we said earlier, coelacanths aren’t the only kind of fish to have lobed fins. Lungfishes, endemic to South America, Africa, and Australia, share this trait with their long distance relation as well, but they’re actually capable of using these fins to walk short distances from one body of water to another. And as their name implies, lungfishes sport lungs in addition to gills. However, there are only three remaining species of lungfish; many went extinct during the separation of the prehistoric supercontinents.
