Steampunk 101: 15 Must-Read Novels

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (1995)

A sort of secularist answer to The Chronicles of Narnia, Philip Pullman’s entire His Dark Materials series happens to be one of the best steampunk works ever. It has a lot to say and a lot of depth, but also manages to be a completely enjoyable steampunky fantasy adventure, even without all the quality of message and all the other bits that make a novel important beyond simply being escapism.
