China Mieville may be second only to Neil Gaiman in terms of huge names among sci-fi writers, and even he has had some fun with steampunk. Perdido Street Station is one of Mieville’s most celebrated novels, and for good reason. It blends all sorts of aspects of different sci-fi, but that steampunky goodness is definitely on the forefront, even if it’s a bit darker than your average example of the genre.
