Internet slang can be divided into numerous categories, but many are under the false assumption that all of them are geeky. As prevalent as phrases including “lolz,” “omg,” and “rotfl” are, a part of geek culture they are not. What these phrases are being confused with is leetspeak: A ciphered language pioneered by hackers of the‘80s to keep their sites or discussion groups from being easily searchable, obscuring sentences via the clever arrangement of numbers, letters, punctuation marks, and symbols. |<33|o 17 633|<`/!
