There’s no middle ground when it comes to The Big Bang Theory, one either enjoys the series or loathes it with the fire of a thousand burning suns. The ire directed at Chuck Lorre’s dubious magnum opus isn’t unwarranted as the show perpetuates the public and Hollywood stereotype that geeks are socially inept clowns who understand the minutiae of DC Comics continuity better than regular human interaction. And TBBT’s propensity for running off geeky references faster than a Gatling gun fires bullets is such a desperate bid for geek cred; you can’t help yourself from feeling a smidgen of embarrassment for the writing staff. If you truly want to learn about geek culture, consult a real geek, not the CBS Thursday night lineup.
