The Great Ape

No group of animals is better versed in trickery than the great apes. Chimpanzees are masters of the art of subterfuge, and gorillas have been observed blaming their mistakes on kittens (low). But as any history nerd knows well, human beings are the apex tricksters of planet Earth. Over the years we have fine-tuned the art of cheating, lying, and pulling the wool over the eyes of others. And you know what? That's okay. There's a theory that deception in humans evolved alongside empathy—they are, after all, both a result of being able to imagine oneself in another's shoes. As long as we all try our best to develop our empathetic side and resist the charms of trickery, we're headed in the right direction.

What animal or plant is your favorite trickster?
