Explore Middle Earth From Space, BECAUSE YOU CAN!

Explore Middle Earth From Space, BECAUSE YOU CAN!

By Matt Heckler

A group of scientists in the United Kingdom have once again proven that nerds are capable of ridiculous things if they have enough time on their hands. In what they call The Middle-Earth DEM Project, the group has designed a fully-explorable 3D recreation of Middle-Earth from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series. Just in case you've already wrapped up your quest to explore every corner of our actual planet on Google Earth, you can now start fresh with the land of Hobbitses!

A demo of the project is currently available on their website, but most of the links in the navigation bar are dead because it is clear this is still a work in progress. The rendering uses Outerra, a program that talented designers can use to make these digital worlds explorable, so your computer needs to be able to handle that to begin your Middle-Earthen foray. The demo doesn't appear to have any creatures or people with whom to interact, but we're holding out hope that in the future we will have the pleasure of being eaten by Balrogs.

What are you most looking forward to seeing in Middle-Earth?
