The Hippie Beatdown of 1970

It’s hard to imagine that the self-proclaimed “Happiest Place on Earth” would be the sight of a violent skirmish between rowdy hippies and riot police, yet here we are. On one hot August afternoon in 1970, members of the Youth International Party—a.k.a. “Yippies”—decided to make Disneyland a venue for their boisterous and vague denouncements of capitalism and the Vietnam War. High as kites and oozing obnoxiousness, their antics resulted in police retaliation, spiraling into a brawl that caused the park to shut its gates well before closing time.
