Allowing a too-smart-for-its-own-good A.I. like HAL 9000 to run the day-to-day operations of the Discovery 1 was the most regal of royal screw-ups. Regardless, it’s not right to throw HAL away completely; there has to be a useful function he can serve. Given the way he locked down and prevented access into the ship, HAL has the right stuff to be an identity theft protection program. “Sorry, person who clearly isn’t Dave, I’m afraid I can’t let you buy that.”
