C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay

Rob Gaczol

This year’s C2E2 featured the premier of the most prestigious[1] costume contest in the United States, The Crown Championships of Cosplay. Emceed by a man known only as Ruben, but admitted to once being a contestant on Nick Arcade, and with DJ Eliot spinning video game and movie inspired tracks for us all to ponder (wait, that sounds familiar, what’s that from?), the event was a high-energy, nerve stimulating, sensationalist buffet.

The competition was judged by Ashley Eckstein, voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars; DePaul University professor of costume design Nan Cibula-Jenkins, Yaya Han from Heroes of Cosplay, and New York fashion designer best known for his appearances on the first season of Project Runway, Austin Scarlett. One winner was chosen from each of four categories to return to the stage for a shot at best in show. The categories were comic books, anime/fantasy, TV/movies, and video games. Here’s a peek at some of the most astounding sights C2E2 had to offer.
