8) Western Black Rhino
The most recent extinction in human memory, news of the western black rhinoceros' extinction shocked the world and forced us to ask ourselves if current protective measures are enough. A popular big game animal, black rhinos came under government protection in the 1930s. Concern eventually waned over the years and the population started to drop significantly. Black rhino poachers either hunting for sport or on the behalf of the traditional Chinese medicine industry—prizing their horns for dubious medicinal purposes—were never formally prosecuted, creating this truly egregious failure in conservation.
