A few weeks back, scientists discovered an ancient shark fossil
that challenges the conventional wisdom that evolution basically left the shark family alone. It turns out that these apex predators hit upon the broad strokes of their design early, but more subtle advances—like their streamlined gills
—are recent additions. We thought we'd share some other examples of animals who have changed a lot over the millennia, because the shapeshifting powers of natural selection are pretty darn amazing.
