What to Watch Before Godzilla

There are actually two versions of the film to be found in the Criterion Collection edition, the American version (highly edited and featuring additional scenes with American actor Raymond Burr), and the original Japanese. In all honesty, the Japanese version is far and away the better of the two, but the American is not without its charms… And fun fact! Godzilla was not originally conceived as a green, fire-breathing dinosaur. In fact the Godzilla that we all know and love only came about after several unsuccessful conceptions, including a giant octopus (???) and a ginormous ape with a mushroom like head, an attempt to draw a connection to the WWII bombings perhaps too literally!
