Our Predictions for the Future of DC Movies

Our Predictions for the Future of DC Movies

Soooooo Nikki Finke (founder of Deadline [a Hollywood news site]) leaked the alleged list of movies DC is going to announce at this July's Comic Con. It reveals their plans through 2018 and is it accurate? We can't be sure! But that doesn't mean we can't speculate about the details of this news!

First of all, here's the schedule she lays out:

May 2016 – Batman v Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2

We already knew that Batman v Superman, Justice League, and Wonder Woman were coming (though... really? We have to wait until 2017 to finally have a movie starring a female superhero? And no, Catwoman and Elektra don't count. Sorry Elektra's mom.)

Shazam was originally called Captain Marvel, but there's no way they're going to call him that for obvious reasons. This is an interesting choice since DC has been going with a darker tone for their movies and Shazam is a pretty lighthearted concept. Shazam is a child who shouts out "Shazam" to turn into an adult with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury.

BTDubs, Zeus is Greek and Mercury is Roman, so really it should either be Zeus and Hermes or Jupiter and Mercury...But we digress!

Shazam's main adversary is Black Adam, essentially ancient Egyptian Shazam who became corrupted. A child who magically becomes an adult and fights a magic ancient Egyptian? We're already confused.

There have been a lot of Sandmen throughout DC history, but this one is almost certainly the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's series which studio exec David Goyer has confirmed they've been wanting to make. More interesting news, as "Dream," the titular Sandman of Gaiman's books hasn't really been a member of the Justice League (though other Sandmen have) so perhaps DC isn't going the Marvel route of trying to connect ALL of their films?

As far as the Flash/Green Lantern team up, these guys over at Cosmic Book News claim via an exclusive source that it'll be a TV movie. This actually makes a lot of sense since there's already going to be a Flash TV show on the CW starring Grant Gustin, of Glee fame. Could this then spinoff a Green Lantern TV show? Anything's possible! (except Ryan Reynolds playing the Lantern, because apparently everyone is just pretending his movie didn't happen.)

Finally we have Man of Steel 2. This is a surprise as most people seemed to have assumed we were getting Batman v Superman in place of a Man of Steel sequel. Given that they've already covered Zod and Eisenberg is cast as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman, it'll be interesting to see where they go to raise the stakes for that sequel. The Justice League movie will presumably have some major villain that requires the powers of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Aquaman (Jason Momoa AKA Khal Drogo), Flash, and Green Lantern (and maybe also Shazam now) all put together, so... Darkseid (AKA DC's Thanos though he actually debuted three years earlier)? Maybe the Superman sequel will feature Apocalypse, most famous as the villain who killed Superman. It's harder to get much higher stakes than that.

So there's our idol speculation about the future of DC! None of this news is really confirmed yet, but we'll keep you posted as all the developments unfurl!

What DC movie are you most looking forward to?
