Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" Heading to Starz

Neil Gaiman's

Someone somewhere must have done something right to please the premium cable pantheon. Otherwise we wouldn’t have confirmation that FremantleMedia North America will be producing the television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s road-tripping fantasy epic, American Gods, for Starz. With the author himself sliding into the executive producer saddle alongside Bryan Fuller and Michael Green of Hannibal and Heroes fame, respectively, American Gods is shaping up to be a production of legendary proportions.

In addition to working in a production capacity, Fuller and Green will be serving as series showrunners and writers for the pilot. This development comes after HBO, in a disheartening shred of news, announced last year that they would be abandoning their commitment to an American Gods adaptation, with network president of programming Michael Lombardo stating in a Vulture interview that writing difficulties were a factor in the decision.

Despite HBO’s rationale, the production issues they faced have done nothing to diminish the enthusiasm expressed by those involved at FremantleMedia and Starz. According to Fuller, “Neil Gaiman has created the holiest of holy toy boxes with ‘American Gods’ and filled it with all manner of magical thing, born of new gods and old. Michael Green and I are thrilled to crack this toy box wide open and unleash the fantastical titans of heaven and earth and Neil’s vividly prolific imagination.”

American Gods would mark a major stepping stone for FremantleMedia North America—the production company behind reality television programming including American Idol and America’s Got Talent—as it would be their next (and perhaps major) foray into fictional dramas following series such as the CW’s The Tomorrow People.
