11 Things You Didn't Know About the First Moon Landing

Michael Collins: Designer Extraordinaire

To cinch the role of Apollo 11's command module pilot, Michael Collins had to be a man of many talents. But one that he is not popularly remembered for is that of the mission's insignia designer. Collins put together this image of an eagle flying on the moon (Stephen Colbert would be proud).

Fun fact: in his original design, the talons of the bird were clearly visible, but Collins revised it to show it carrying an olive branch to give it a more peaceful tone. Talons or no, this insignia remains totally badass 45 years later.
