The Scenic Route
Apollo 11 actually landed about four miles off target! The detour occurred because the lunar module cabin wasn't fully depressurized when it separated from the command module, causing a burst of gas to push the lander way off course. That might explain why Charles Duke at mission control were so freaking nervous by the time the Eagle landed. He was stuttering and mispronounced the base, saying, "Roger, Twan—Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot." It's pretty nuts how much everyone was flying by the seat of their astro-pants on this mission!
