Geekiest ALS Ice Bucket Challenges Round-Up

By Robert Punchur

ALS, Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis, ("Lou Gehrig's Disease") is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Sufferers experience the loss of essential motor neurons that control muscle movement throughout the body. Severity can vary with more extreme cases resulting in paralyzed bodies and death.

In hopes of raising awareness, a high-spirited challenge has taken the Internet by storm. It is known simply as “The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.” Participants are asked to donate funds towards research/treatment. They are also given the option of publically sharing a video where they dump ice water on their head.

Unfortunately, the ice water does nothing to cure ALS. However, the countless videos have made the disease a number-one trend all week long on social media. It is also getting more news coverage than ever before. The NY Times estimates that over $41 million has been raised as a result.
