Ryan & Addison Try Play "Human or Zygon?" On this Week's Doctor Who Chat
It's been a long time coming, but this week's Doctor Who saw the return of everyone's favorite cosplaying science-y hero: Osgood! But which Osgood is human? Or was it the Zygon we saw... um... last season? What's the truth and what are the consequences of the events of this week's Doctor Who? Ryan and Addison discuss these and more SUPER important topics below! Dive in and leave your monster-biases behind!
HELLO LADY ME
Call me Osgood
Human or Zygon?
DOES IT MATTER
Not to me
I love Osgood
and I was really waiting for this episode
I'm one of those people: Osgood can do no wrong
I don't even know what to think of London anymore
Yeah. I guess everyone there might be a Cylon
I mean ZYGON
Or do I?
Let me rephrase: ALIENS EVERYWHERE
So. I really liked this episode
and I have only WEIRD bad things to say about it
First off: is this season just playing the "How Many Times Can We Show David Tennant's Face?" game?
Because I now count THREE different episodes
I think they're playing "How many ways can we break people's hearts other than the usual?"
Seems like it!
Though, getting Osgood back is a gift
Every post about Doctor Who episodes and whatnot
Have David Tennant's picture on them
But you know
Seeing Matt Smith again was nice
like last season!
When he phoned Clara
I did not expect that to happen
and then they did the Matt Smith flashback to when Clara first called him
Yeah, that was so awesome
That's still a great moment
Both times I didn't expect it
It made the regeneration so different from the previous two
BECAUSE HEY, these things are new!
I feel like we're headbutting each other again
I have so many thoughts
If there were TWO Osgoods
From "The Day of the Doctor"
Doesn't that mean there are TWO Kate Stewarts?
It also means Elizabeth is still alive as a Zygon
Are Zygons like, immortal?
I don't know, but they certainly like dressing up as girls
WHICH ELIZABETH says that the Doctor is her enemy in "The
Shakespeare Code" then?
I love all this nonsense
my head is going back to the painting
but then I'm like ahhhh
How come I don't own that painting
it seems wrong
do you think there are more than one version of Kate?
HOW COME YOU DON'T CALL ME THE PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD
I don't know
if there is, she would know
because Kate has everything happen under her nose, basically
I feel like there is more going on that Kate knows about that she doesn't tell
When she says "someone with a TARDIS"
that might not be the Doctor!
with the whole immortal/mortal thing
there's so much more left to interpretation
SO MANY REFERENCES
when you think about it
there's also two Clara's
I dunno. But that Clara is clearly evil
and one of them was a Dalek at some point
the other one's a Zygon
Just when Clara gets whole
WHAT IS WHAT ANYMORE
she gets fractured
here's my main problem with the episode
I like the idea of thinking about the Zygons as being just like us
they seem too jerky/evil
when they look like Zygons
I don't buy there are peaceful ones
It's a nice theme
Heh they basically look like jerky sometimes
but it doesn't always play
I think it's a recurring theme that needs to stop
like with the Slitheen
it went along great because Doctor, Rose, Jack, Tin Dog (Mickey)
I'm not sure I follow
but the Twelfth Doctor and the series in general doesn't have the same dynamics to make us believe that the Zygons could be good
I think I could believe that they're not evil
it's just like
it's this monster from the 70's version of the show
that doesn't play well as being sympathetic
it's a interesting emotional challenge to be sure
which I like the show pushing
(like don't hate on something because it looks like a monster)
but the show is having that both ways
because they are scary monsters
it's hard to know what to latch onto sometimes
which is smart-ish
but doesn't always work
honestly, for me, the show is *kinda* falling apart
What do you mean?
That's so extreme!
I'm trying to put it together
not falling apart
there's a tear at the seam
there's so much focus on the Doctor
yet there's so little focus on the Doctor
this episode had very little of him in it
and then they continue with the loose ends
I am glad I brushed up on my Classic Who
Well. I think this episode made the least sense of all of the ones this season
But I liked it because it felt like an old David Tennant episode
(Or a 3rd Doctor Pertwee episode)
(or a 7th Doctor episode!)
Yeah, which, honestly, I can barely handle
really, they gave it away when the Zygon was Bonnie
Bonnie Langford played his companion!
and Osgood was wearing his apparel (somewhat)
But I think the 7th Doctor is borderline unwatchable!
(everyone is booing at me now)
I think everything in between Peter Davison
and the 9th
is almost AWFUL
Paul McGann is good like, now, but not in the TV movie!
YOU TAKE THAT BACK
I'm just saying
not all this stuff is equal
I barely like Patrick Troughton too!
(I'm the worst!)
I like the "cool" Doctors
Yeah, I feel like a lot of them did better with the audio episodes
1, 3, 4, 5, 10
because the writing was horrible
at the time
Actually, it's funny there are so many two-parters this season
because it's very old-school
Very Tennant-ish too
We should do our top threes! I think!
THIS TIME I ACTUALLY HAVE TOP THREES
Go for it!
-Osgood is a hybrid. We have another hybrid. Maybe. (We definitely have another hybrid.)
-More guitar! I'm working on a pattern with the choice of music - I feel like they're hints to what the main obstacle in the episode is
like Pretty Woman - Missy
Amazing Grace - Zygons
Stairway to Heaven-Danny Pink :)
and of course
I also have a fourth
because this made me really happy
they mentioned Harry Sullivan
Just from the little thing at the beginning? Or was there another Matt Smith thing?
I missed that!
Well, the beginning and the little hints with kissing a Zygon etc.
I AM A SUCKER FOR ALL THE REFERENCES
But Tennant kissed the Zygon!
Not Matt Smith!
but it all points to that episode!
and there's a sheriff involved
(which really doesn't have anything to do with Matt Smith, but still)
Harry Sullivan was the naval surgeon
who made Z76
My top three things are
why did I know this was going to happen...
3. Alternate universe Osgood that I made up
1. I liked that Osgood was back and that a random storyline from "Day of the Doctor" got it's own thing.
2. I liked all the different characters. I actually LIKED that the Doctor wasn't the focus
3. Despite some of my criticisms, I liked the THEMES
Reminded me of good episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
OR Battlestar Galactica
I'm a sucker for evil twins
this was a huge treat
I can't wait for next week!
I loved the cliffhanger
It actually does seem a lot like Star Trek
even with the last few episodes
some of the characters, even
I think that's a good thing.
I ALSO think Russel T. Davies should write that new Star Trek show that is getting launched in 2017
(I think RTD should come back to Doctor Who....)
Predictions for next week?
How are they going to get out of this?
I don't even know
(AND JACK HARKNESS)
that would be cool!
I'm guessing second Kate Stewart
I'm not very sure about that
just because it's been so underplayed all this time
but Clara, yes!
We forgot about Clara
We see there are two of her
which is which
maybe we'll never know
it's been thousands and thousands of years since Elizabeth
Moffat could be a Zygon too
we'll never know
Moffat is a Zygon
and I am too!
For now, I'll leave you in my human form!
And I'm the President of the World
you have my permission
Thank you! Addison!
Tally ho, Ryan!
