Addison & Ryan Ponder Eternity in this Week's Doctor Who Chat

Addison & Ryan Ponder Eternity in this Week's Doctor Who Chat

BBC America

As if time-travel were an actual real thing, we've somehow almost come to the close of the most current season of Doctor Who. After the harrowing events of "Face the Raven," the Doctor is totally on his own for the first time in maybe... forever. When does the first second of eternity begin? When does it end? How is the Doctor's journey a mirror for our own lives?

Oh, forget it. Addison and Ryan are just going to lose their minds (as usual) over how over-the-top awesome this episode was. Dive in: bet you won't see this coming!

Ryan Britt

Hi Addison!!

Addison

Ryan!
Hello!
(this is the part where you say "It's me" because you're Lady Me, geddit?)

Ryan Britt

It's ME!
(The hybrid?)

Addison

Depends on which hybrid you mean

Ryan Britt

I mean the REAL ONE
from "Daleks in Manhattan"
that Dalek/Human!

Addison

AHHH
Oh man, I can't believe how long ago that was
and the pigs!

Ryan Britt

And Andrew Garfield!
Anyway

Addison

*swoon*

Ryan Britt

that was over A BILLION YEARS AGO

Addison

AS LONG AS I HAVE WAITED TO HAVE THIS DISCUSSION
But seriously
this episode
was so awesome

Ryan Britt

I thought it was incredible
I've now seen it twice

Addison

SAME
If there was one thing you could change about it, what would it be?

Ryan Britt

Hmm
Great question
I suppose I would have put one or two more Doctor Who-ish memories into the castle
But I dunno
that might have made it cheap somehow

Addison

I guess

Ryan Britt

like if he stumbles into a room with the Weeping Angles
I dunno
maybe there's a crying child in one of the rooms
and it's Susan
(or Rose)

Addison

Good God, that's a scary thing to walk into
ROSE
Eh
I think if Clara wasn't there, I would've said Clara
but they nailed that one to the wall
hehehe
geddit?

Ryan Britt

YES
The episode was like showing off how great Capaldi can be
Was it longer than a regular episode?
(I'm not complaining)

Addison

I think so
Around 50 minutes or so
YES
I think it's fair to say that the people who still don't like Capaldi as the Doctor have probably had their minds blown

Ryan Britt

Right

Addison

AND
it goes to show that he doesn't need a companion to be the Doctor
which I felt was really important after Clara left
just because she'd been there for so long

Ryan Britt

I think it's a precedent though, the most alone time in a given episode for any Doctor on the show
Yeah, I mean, say what you will about Clara, but she's been on the show longer than any other *contemporary* companion.

(Post 2005)

Right?
2.5 seasons?

Addison

Yep

Ryan Britt

Wait
Amy and Rory
are tied?
(But Clara even got in on their half season!)

Addison

YES

Ryan Britt

One thing post David Tennant: companions stay longer
He was the Doctor people had to get away from J

Addison

He was foxy!
But yeah
Clara:
-Died
*hears multiple screams in the distance*
-Was the longest contemporary companion
Two things that haven't happened in a LONG time

Ryan Britt

An episode like this has never happened though
I think beyond the awesome themes and big metaphoric questions, the reason why it was so resonate is because the aesthetic was so specific and so patient
And the music! It reflected a totally different mood and pace

Addison

WE WERE IN THE DOCTOR'S MIND, which I thought was so incredibly cool
And I agree about the pace
All I could think about was how "Doctor Who" this was and wasn't at the same time

Ryan Britt

Before, when I watched it the first time, I thought it would be a terrible place for someone to start watching the show, but now, I don't know, it's almost a self-contained story, in a sense
I know that sounds crazy, because there's so much continuity stuff, but the basic concept, of someone stuck in a time-loop, but patiently CHANGING it, so they're out of it
that's awesome
I guess, the thing I would change would to have had it been a real place, I'm a bit confused on that. Was that a real planet? J

Addison

IT REMINDS YOU THAT HE'S A TIME TRAVELER
which I thought just added to the whole "Doctor who?" aspect of this series

Ryan Britt

Exactly

Addison

I just thought he was in the confession dial

Ryan Britt

Right, I think you're supposed to think that at the end
I guess I'm still shaky on that whole idea
but

Ryan Britt

As a classic Time Loop story? Awesome

Addison

I KNOW
It's really hard

Ryan Britt

ALSO

Addison

especially when I kept expecting Bors to show up

Ryan Britt

Totally borrowed from Star Trek!!!!!!
(Storing the pattern of someone in the transporter)

Addison

YASSS
Oh, how fun it would be if we watched the episodes together
that way I get to slap your arm instead of my imaginary Clara's
Speaking of Clara

Ryan Britt

Awww...someday!

Addison

I knew there would be flashbacks
but this was just a whole new ballgame

Ryan Britt

How do you mean?

Addison

Clara in front of a chalkboard?

Ryan Britt

Awww. Yes
But no "traditional" flashbacks like in "The Girl Who Died"

Addison

If I had to say "traditional" I would go back to the RTD era where Rose pops up every passing moment
:D

Ryan Britt

Right
I wonder about next week
if there will be some serious flashbacks

Addison

Ooh
GALLIFREY
Well, from what I hear Clara's in this series until the Christmas special

Ryan Britt

Hmmm
In flashback mode for sure

Addison

and then we get River Song

Ryan Britt

Well
let's not get ahead of ourselves
(I love River Song, I know others don't, but I do)

Addison

(I just didn't love the context of it. Same with Martha, or I would've liked her to the same extent as others.)
BUT
Gallifrey

Ryan Britt

Well
I saw this coming a little bit

Addison

How do we know what's real and what's not
this was just like Inception

Ryan Britt

I think it's real

Addison

is he still dreaming?

Ryan Britt

Nah
I mean
the trailer makes it seems pretty real
It would be a huge cop-out to have him not on Gallifrey
after NOT being in a real castle
for a billion years or whatever

Addison

(because they're old? haha)
I just
it's so much like the Classic era
it's beautiful how they can incorporate it

Ryan Britt

It's really great
I just guess I'm in love with how it all felt. Just so different
I don't think the show could have gotten away with this at any other point
in fact, I'm not sure how it got away with something this weird at this point
It's actually really impressive we all sat through that
because it's just so darn odd and new

Addison

I think it's just like you said
we all saw it coming

Ryan Britt

Right

Addison

"Where I've always been going. Home. The long way round."
This is where we've been going
and so has the Doctor
It's so beautiful

Ryan Britt

It's really neat. It's also nice that the events in the "Day of the Doctor" still matter
I do wonder if we'll see a direct link to him showing up with all the other TARDISes
(No sir, all 13!!!)

Addison

*Capaldi intensifies*
I wonder that too sometimes
because Moffat wouldn't leave a trace

Ryan Britt

That's still such a brilliant moment. Kind like when Clara showed up EARLY in season 7.
It makes the time-travel aspect reallly work
I think we might get the money shot of him getting in and helping all of them

Addison

OHHH
that would be so cool

Ryan Britt

He might be more instrumental than we think
I could talk for hours about Doctor Who right now.
In truth, I think it's more fun to speculate about Doctor Who at the moment than it is about Star Wars! J

Addison

I FEEL THE SAME WAY
I can't believe we're almost done with this series

Ryan Britt

I'm very sad

Addison

:(

Ryan Britt

Okay. I think we should get to our usual top 3
if that's even possible?
And then do predictions?

Addison

I'm assuming we both have nothing to complain about (although I do wish the Veil didn't have all those flies around it.) wanna do our usual top 3?
AHHHHH
Headbutt

Ryan Britt

Yes
And you start!

Addison

Okay
-David Tennant
-Matt Smith
-Peter Capaldi
In that order
There were so many glimpses!
It's just like Matt Smith's first episode where he walks through the hologram of the previous Doctors
Well, projections
But with Capaldi, you could just see it

Ryan Britt

Totally, I guess that's gotta be intentional.

Addison

even more so because he said "The Doctor will see you now"

Ryan Britt

yeah. CHILLS

Addison

And I loved the time loop
and the first-hand glimpse into the Doctor's mind
his inner TARDIS
...and this could go on forever
Your turn!

Ryan Britt

Okay

1. I liked how simple and complex the episode was at the same time. In some ways it was about the Doctor getting out of a trap, which is an analogy for the nature of the show in general. (I.E. the Doctor runs away from the monster long enough to recharge and then starts running again.)
But, eventually, he always has to FACE the monster
and in this instance, that meant being super patient
Which is my number 2.
This episode wasn't giving us what we WANTED in the way a big Doctor Who episode could have
instead it was weird, and patient with its premise. The Aesthetics (music, setting, pace) helped with that. But the writing was fairly subtle.
(Which sounds insane, but it IS when compared with something like "The Zygon Inversion"

Addison

EXACTLY
and I love how it referenced all the way back to the Second Doctor

Ryan Britt

Which leads me to number 3. The montage sequence of him getting through the time loop
At first, it just seems hopeless

Addison

the Doctor did not escape Gallifrey because he was bored

Ryan Britt

and you're like "Oh no, he's trapped forever"
"He's never going to get out, this is so sad."
And then you see the TINY amount of progress being made

Addison

*Bird*

Ryan Britt

The use of that Brothers Grimm story is awesome
And it's great how we get a little more of it at a time
For reference: http://www.grimmstories.com/en/grimm_fairy-tales/the_shepherd_boy

Addison

Much like most other episodes

with MacBeth and stuff

Ryan Britt

Right
This was particularly literary.
Which I loved
Okay
phew

Addison

as literary as Luke Skywalker Can't Read

Ryan Britt

MORE SO

Addison

okay
predictions?

Ryan Britt

YEP

Addison

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Gallifrey High Command :)

Ryan Britt

Hmm
War Council!
Remember their separate from the high command
(They hid Timothy Dalton from us in "Day of the Doctor")
To avoid that being contradictory
*they're

Addison

YES
"Calling War Council Gallifrey, this is the Doctor!"

Ryan Britt

Exactly

Addison

Until next time?

Ryan Britt

Until next time!
Oh my last prediction:
MISSY
We'll see Missy!
And maybe even see how Missy escaped the time-lock or whatever on Gallifrey

Ryan Britt

(when she was still John Simm)

Addison

YES
Oh man, I think we see Ashildr too

Ryan Britt

Ha
she's in the trailer

Addison

I'm anticipating the Doctor's reaction
GERONIMO

Ryan Britt

HA
For goodness sake! Gallifrey stands!
