Musical Fiction Contest:

By Miss Marm

This story by camip0p reminds me of a graffiti mural—quick, colorful, entertaining, and a little gritty.

Back In Your Head

“Come on,” Kaity said, pushing James in her pushy Kaity way. “Let’s go dance!”

She squeezed in next to him, adding another loose end to the weird couch party of four. Jay and Leigh in a person-knot on one end, Kaity with her drinks on the other and James in the center, quiet.

James shrugged her away. He felt like the whole room was filled with the beer in Kaity’s cup. She used to hate drinking... She used to be so sweet, mysterious. Now...

“Earth to James!” She said and paused, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“I don’t know, you keep giving me these looks like-”

“What cup is that?”

“Huh?”

“How many cups, Kaity?”

“I dunno. What? I’m just having fun, James!” She sighed. “You used to have fun too before you started sulking on the couch at parties.”

“Oy!” said, the end of the couch. They both looked over at Jay. “D’you mind moving this somewhere else then?”

James gave Kaity a last look. “You used to be fun, too. Before you started drinking up a storm.” He walked away.

Kaity felt the world sink, and then it started to spin. “Bathroom,” she muttered, placing her drink on the floor.

“You gonna drink that, then?”

* * *

“All right there, Kaity?”

Calvin was standing against the wall, playing with his sweatshirt. She leaned against the wall next to him.

“Not--hic--really,” she said, and sniffled. Calvin didn’t ask for the story, didn’t lecture her on why she shouldn’t drink. He just put his arm around her. They stood like that for a while, and Kaity put her head on his shoulder.

“You know what’s funny?” he said. “The word flabbergasted.”

“What?” He gave her a funny look, and they both laughed. She didn’t feel so sick anymore.

"So are you going to tell me what's wrong?"

"It's better now."

"Good," said, looking at her. “You’re really pretty, Kaity.”

She smiled. Kaity leaned in close to Calvin. She kissed him.  “Let’s go dance?” They pulled away from the wall and picked a spot close to the throbbing speakers.

The whole room bounced with the music’s techno beat as the song’s bopping chorus filled the air.

I'm not unfaithful
But I'll stray
I'm not unfaithful
But I'll stray
When I get a little scared

Kaity paused, spotting James watching her from the corner. She moved closer to Calvin and looked right at James.

I just want back in your head
I just want back in your head
I'm not unfaithful
But I'll stray
I'm not unfaithful
But I'll stray

Based on "Back In Your Head," by Tegan and Sara

I really like the way camipop presents her characters without interpreting them for us. She allows us to form our own opinions about them, and that's one of the pleasures of good fiction.

What do you like or dislike about "Back In Your Head"? Do you think the incorporation of lyrics works?
