Claudius is X and Hamlet is Z

How DO teachers do it? In a mere two sentences, they can make your eyes glaze over and your brain turn into a block of moldy cheese:

"Compare Hamlet and Claudius. How does the personality of Claudius help illuminate Hamlet's character and action?"

UGH! It's hard to pinpoint what's wrong with this prompt, but through some dark magic, it makes me want to go take a nap.

If I were a student trying to write a paper in response to this question, I'd start by thinking of stuff Claudius does that provokes a reaction in Hamlet. Here's one

Reporting on "The Murder of Gonzago"

We all love it when teachers put some thought into assignments, instead of asking for a boring old 5-paragraph paper. But unusual assignments can cause stress, too. A Sparkler writes:

Ok so, I have to do a creative writing assignment for my grade twelve english class and we have to pretend that we're drama crtics who were at Hamlet's play that night. We have to talk about our observations on the theatre, Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia that night and our observations on the king and him walking out, but I have no clue how to write a news article and make it interesting.
