Overview

Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, and political revolutionary. Marx is the originator of Marxism—a collection of theories rooted in economics, sociology, and philosophy that have had an enormous impact on the world since they were formulated and published by Marx and his friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels (1820–1895).

This SparkNotes guide offers one-section discussions of two essays from Marx’s Economic & Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 as well as a one-section discussion of Marx and Engels’s The Communist Manifesto (1848) and two one-sections discussions of Marx’s Das Kapital (1867).

SparkNotes also offers separate, comprehensive study guides of The Communist Manifesto and several chapters from the first volume of Das Kapital.
