Combing through SparkNotes is as easy as 1,2,3. Most of the time, you can type in whatever you want—from The Scarlet Letter to The Fibonacci Sequence.

These search tips will help you become a power user:

1. To find an exact phrase, type it in quotes.
   
   
2. Search will only return pages with EVERY word and phrase you entered. If you search for tom sawyer it will only return pages containing both "tom" and "sawyer".
   
   
3. Using a minus (-) will return pages without a word or phrase. For example: pearl harbor -"ben affleck" -movie will only return pages with "pearl" and "harbor" and without "ben affleck" and "movie".
   
   
4. You can use the word "OR" (in all caps) to allow either of a couple words or phrases. Example: "bin laden" OR bunnies.
   
   
5. Use the checkboxes at the top of the search page to narrow your results. If you only want message board posts, check the "Message Board" box and research. Here's a Message Board-only search for "help due tomorrow."
   
   
6. If you're getting too many results, you can use Advanced Search to narrow your search to specific channels (like math or biology). Advanced Search can also be used instead of the minuses, ors, and quotes.
   
   
7. Spelling counts! We now check your spelling and recommend variations of what you type. Example: Oddyssey should be Odyssey.
   
   
8. We automatically weight searches to favor SparkNotes over Messages. We have calibrated these weights based on what most users search for and read. If your particular preferences differ, however, use the Search Preferences to change these values.
