We Heart The Eighties Movies

By:Kathryn_Williams

There was so much love shown for The Princess Bride in the comments on our SAS post about daisy chains last week, it got us thinking about our favorite '80s movies—the best thing to come out of that decade other than legwarmers. (Thank you, John Hughes and Tom Cruise.)

You know them, you love them, you quote them to impress members of the opposite sex. In fact, we believe any one of these films could singlehandedly unite the world into one utopian, "We Are the World"-singing land of peace and prosperity. If we could only get Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong Il, and Obama in a room together and roll Goonies...

If you don't have them already, you absolutely must add the following movies to your library (you'll thank us in college when your dorm room doesn't get cable):

A Guide To Other Vampire Movies

By:Matt_Hunziker

Here at Sparklife, we’re certainly no strangers to vampires, whether they’re gracing the pages of novels, starring in upcoming movies, or getting run down by New York taxis.

For those of you who can't get enough of the fictional fanged creatures, we’d like to suggest a selection of undead literature and films beyond Stephenie Meyer’s lucrative franchise, starting with a list of other vampire movies you might want to check out between now and Labor Day.

Summer Movies that Shine (No Sunscreen Required)

By:Contributor

We've got a long weekend ahead of us, Sparklers, so why not spend a few hours (or, ahem, days) at the movies? Sparkler hootie08 makes some summer picks in this post! —SparkNotes Editors

Summer is finally in full swing: School is out, people are flocking to the public pool, and the summer movie lineup is oozing with star-studded, action-packed appeal. There is something about summer movies that always gets me excited, and this summer is not one to disappoint. I have only just begun to dip into the flood of summer blockbusters thus far, but here are some on my to-see list:

Confession: I Still Play Pokémon

By:Matt_Hunziker

Last weekend, millions of people of all ages went to see the action movie “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” This is a film based on a children’s cartoon, which itself was based on a popular line of toys, yet adults are embracing it openly. That's right: we as a nation are refusing to put aside childish things, and we at SparkNotes like this. We think everyone should feel free to play with action figures and Easy Bake Ovens well into their 40s!

And the immature fun doesn't stop there. Let's not forget about...

OMG! Robert Pattinson Was Hit By a Car!

By:Katie_Rolnick

Whoa! For reals, Robert Pattinson was swiped/grazed/sort-of-hit by a taxi while filming his new movie, "Remember Me," in New York last week. Calm down. CALM DOWN! He's fine. It really wasn't a big deal. OK, so maybe it was a big deal. But he's not hurt. And his hair is still swirlicious.

But this incident does highlight an issue of major concern here at SparkNotes. According to a few news accounts of the incident, Pattinson was clipped by the cab because he was trying to maneuver around a pack of fans. Yes, that's right. His life was endangered because rabid-Twilight-readers-gone-wild a large group of people blocked his way as he was exiting a bookstore. While it's totally understandable that you'd want to camp out on the sidewalk if you knew your fave actor/athlete/author was in the neighborhood, the goal should be to get his attention, not kill him.

Summer Movies Itching To Become Video Games

By:Dan_Bergstein

This Tuesday, the long-awaited Ghostbusters video game was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, to positive reviews from critics and players. The success of the game got us thinking about more recent movies that should be made into video games. (And yes, we know that some of these films already have been adapted into video games, but our game ideas improve upon the originals.)

The Hangover
The first two hours of the game are hilarious and fun, as you navigate around a digital Las Vegas. The last 15 hours of the game, however, feature nothing but dudes misquoting the movie—and it's up to you to try to correct them.

Star Trek
The game is unplayable, as it features nothing but blinding lens flares and shaky camera work.

The Friday Awards (are Back!)

By:~Emily~

Oh my goodness, Sparklers, I nearly started giving out ribbons to randoms on the New York City subway system last Friday because I was so distraught over my inability to post Friday Awards!

But then I remembered, that's how scripts for Made for TV Movies are born.

Now that everything's back in order, I can finally say...

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream... and Then Somebody Gets Eaten By Zombies

By:kat_rosenfield

Ah, summertime! ‘Tis the season for long languid days, hot sultry nights, and, most important, SCREAMING YOUR FACE OFF IN FRONT OF THE TELEVISION.

Horror movies are a warm weather tradition. They counterbalance the serious films of Oscar season with the kind of delightfully mindless entertainment that can only be had from watching a clueless babysitter wandering around in a dark house calling, “Who’s there?!” until a serial killer/monster/flesh-eating zombie leaps out of the darkness and eats her.

There’s just one problem:

Don't Quote Us On That

By:Matt_Hunziker

“Ees nice!”

“Ohhh yeahhh!”

“That’s what she said!”

Get enough extroverts (especially male extroverts) together and at some point you’re going to hit a black hole of pop culture quotations. At this point your conversation will be captured by the terrible gravity of last year’s most popular comedies, action movies, and Dane Cook, then ripped apart into tiny pieces. This phenomenon effects everyone, from the “Simpsons” superfans conversing in a coded language of Springfieldian references, to the Gossip Girls, to the guys in Led Zeppelin t-shirts running “This is Spinal Tap” into the ground.
