Please Note:
The last administration of the old SAT was on 1/22/05. Beginning 3/12/05, only the New SAT will be administered. You should be studying the New SAT book. Go there!
Odd and Even Numbers
Again, you should already know about odd and even numbers and the difference between them. For this topic, however, we will provide a very quick review.
Even Numbers
Even numbers are numbers that are divisible by 2 with no remainder. Remember that 0 is included within this definition.
. . . , –6, –4, –2, 0, 2, 4, 6, . . .
Odd Numbers
Odd numbers are numbers that, when divided by 2, will leave a remainder of 1.
. . . , –5, –3, –1, 1, 3, 5, . . .
Operations and Odd and Even Numbers
There are a number of rules regarding operations and odd and even numbers that you should know instinctively.
Addition Subtraction Multiplication
Even + Even = Even Even – Even = Even EvenEven = Even
Odd + Odd = Even Odd – Odd = Even OddOdd = Odd
Even + Odd = Odd Even – Odd = Odd EvenOdd = Even
When the SAT tests your knowledge of odd and even numbers, which happens about once or twice a test, it will usually test your knowledge of these rules.
