General SparkNotes Test Prep

What is SparkNotes Test Prep?
SparkNotes has helped millions of students understand literature. Now we can help you ace standardized tests! We offer free online books for the SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, and six SAT Subject Tests—the same books we sell in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide, but free for you on the web! We also offer free full-lenth diagnostic practice tests. After taking one of our tests, our detailed analysis of your test results pinpoints your weaknesses precisely to eliminate wasted study time.

How much does this cost?
SparkNotes' online test prep books and diagnostic tests are always free.

The Test Prep books are free online?
Yes! Just like all of our study guides, the SparkNotes Test Prep books are all free online. These web versions contain the same content as the print books we sell in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide.

Your online stuff is great, but can I purchase a SparkNotes print book?
Sure! Barnes & Noble sells them for us. Go there.

Books

What's in the books?
Each online Test Prep book contains the same, exact, complete content as the printed Test Prep books we sell in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide.

How do I navigate the book? How do I skip to a specific chapter or section in the book?
To skip chapters within the book, use the "Jump to a new chapter" pulldown menu at the top of the page. Within each chapter, you can navigate to new sections by clicking on the bold, numbered links at the top of each book page.

I have read this entire book and memorized it! Now what?
If you want to get a great score on your upcoming test, reading the book isn't enough! You need to take a diagnostic practice test to test what you really know and pinpoint your weaknesses. Click here to see a complete list of all of the practice tests we offer.

Test Center

What is the Test Center?
Your diagnostic practice tests are organized in the Test Center. Click on the numbered test icon or the text link to begin taking a new test, or to resume a test you have suspended. Once you've finished a test, you can access the test review and study plan from the Test Center, where your progress and scores are measured.

How do I start a new test?
If you are ready to start a new practice test, just click the bright blue numbered test icon, or the text link that says "Start this test!"

I've finished a practice test. Can I take the same test again?
No, because if you did, you would already know all the answers. Taking the same test twice would not help you practice for the real exam.

How do I resume a suspended test? What does it mean that my test is suspended?
To resume a test you have previously suspended, click the red numbered test icon next to the test you wish to resume or click on the "Resume this test" text link above the bar graph.

If you have suspended a test to take a break, you can go back to it at any time and begin exactly where you left off. When taking practice tests, there is no rule that says that you can't take breaks, although your practice test experience will be much closer to the experience of the real test if you don't take any breaks.

How can I review the questions and see the answers to a test I have finished?
Just click on the "Review this test" link to the above the bar graph for the test you just finished. After clicking this, you'll be able to see the questions, how you answered them, the correct answers, and an explanation of how to solve each question.

Why do I need a target score?
By telling us how well you hope to do on this exam, we can tailor our advice to provide you with particular strategies for achieving that score based on your current performance.

How do I set or reset my target score?
To set or reset your target score, type your new target score into the field labeled "Target Score" and click the "Update" button.

How can I see more specific information and analysis of my performance on a completed test?
To see a detailed analysis of your performance, click the "Analysis" link to the right of the bar graph for the test you just finished.

How can I review the book for this test?
To review before a test, go directly to the book homepage for your test by clicking on the link for the book in the More Resources box in the right column of the Test Center page.

Practice Tests

How do I move around the test?
You move from page to page by clicking on the arrow buttons at the top and bottom of each page. You can jump to a specific question by clicking on the corresponding oval on the answer key on the left of the page. Do not use your browser's "Back" and "Forward" buttons! You will lose your answers!

How do I answer questions?
Click the radio button next to the answer you wish to check. By clicking a different radio button, you will change your answer. To erase your answer altogether, click the "Erase Answer" button next to each question.

What is a guess?
If your answer to a particular question is a guess, click the "Guess" button next to that question. Not only will this mark the question in the leftbar for you to return to it, but after you finished the test, we will tell you how good you are at guessing.

What is a flag?
If you'd like to return to a question later, click the "Flag" button next to that question. Not only will this mark the question in the leftbar for you to find it later easily, but after you finish the test, we will tell you how well you do on such questions.

How can I take the test with the timer off?
You cannot take the test untimed. However, our software does not force you to submit the test when time expires, so you can continue work even after time runs out. For the best practice test experience, we suggest that you simulate test conditions by adhering to the time constraints.

How can I go to a different test section?
For multi-section tests, you must submit the previous section before continuing on to later ones.

How do I submit this test?
Click on the "Submit Section" arrow at the bottom of the leftbar of every test page.

I need a break. How can I save my answers to return to this test later?
Click on the "Suspend Test" button at the bottom of the leftbar of every test page.

Test Review

How do I know which questions I got right and which I got wrong?
Every thing on the Test Review page is color-coded. If you see green, it means something is right. If you see red, something is wrong. Both the scantron bubbles in the left column which link to the questions, as well as the answer choices and the explanations for each question are color-coded this way.

I want to jump to a specific question on a test. How can I do that?
Click on the numbered oval in the sidebar that corresponds to that question.

How do I get to a different section on this test?
Click on the section's name on the left sidebar, or use the Next Section and Previous Section arrows at the top and bottom of every page.

How can I learn more about a specific topic on the test so that I can improve my performance next time?
Each question's topic is listed as a link at the bottom of the explanation box. Click on the link to be taken directly to the portion of our online book that covers that topic.

How can I get back to the Test Center?
To return to the main page of the Test Center, click on the Test Center link at the top of every Test Review page.
