Political science originated in ancient Greece, with philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. In the early modern era, thinkers such as Hobbes began to apply the methods of mathematics and science to the study of politics. This trend continued into the nineteenth century with the breakthroughs in sociology of Marx and Weber. In the twentieth century, political scientists have adopted a number of approaches, including the use of statistical analysis.
