Accents
When using accented words from foreign languages, include the correct accents and put the words in italics.
• l’opéra, niños, hüten
Some foreign-language words, such as cliché, have become firmly entrenched in the language. If a word is in the dictionary, it is considered an English-language word and should not be italicized. You may choose to keep or drop the accents. SparkNotes prefers keeping the original accents, especially since contemporary word-processing software makes it so easy.
• His naïveté drives me crazy.
Also OK: His naivete drives me crazy.
• Her doppelgänger haunted her day and night.
Also OK: Her doppelganger haunted her day and night.
