A mixed metaphor occurs when you begin by comparing
something to one thing and then shift and compare it to something
else entirely.
Mixed metaphor: A
bird in the hand is worth dodging bullets.
Mixed metaphor: Skulking
like a shamed man, the great ship left the harbor, quiet as a mouse.
Mixed metaphor: Before
plunging into the deep part of the pool, let’s run through a few
short examples.
If you tend to get carried away with metaphors, reread
your work to make sure you’ve compared one thing to one other thing
only.
