A final y changes to ies.
Proper Nouns
Form the plural with proper nouns simply by adding s or es.
Note that there is no need for an apostrophe.
• Two New Yorks existed: one for the
rich, and one for the poor.
When forming the plural of a name like Suzy,
simply add s. Don’t change the y to ies,
since doing so changes the original word.
• How many Suzys are there in the fourth
grade?
Use s or es alone,
without an apostrophe, when forming the plural of a family.
• The Waxes bring Mrs. Wax’s famous brownies
wherever they go. Letters
To make an uppercase letter used as a word plural,
add an s.
• Marvin’s six Cs did not please his
father.
To make an italicized lowercase letter used as a word
plural, add an s.
• Yael won the tic-tac-toe game with
a flurry of xs. Numerals
There is no need to include an apostrophe before the s when
making numerals plural. Simply add an s.
• In the 1980s, Cabbage Patch dolls were
all the rage.
• There are three 1s in 12113. Quotations
To make a quoted phrase plural, add an apostrophe plus s inside
the quotation marks.

so sorry’s” and “Please forgive me’s.” Abbreviations

an s.

base camp.

plural by adding an s before the period.

periods, use an apostrophe and s.

to be either stuffy or smelly. Tricky Plurals
Some plurals are tricky, but the application of common
sense will do the trick in most cases. For example, is mother-in-laws or mothers-in-law correct?
We’re talking about more than one mother, not more than one law,
so the latter is right. When in doubt, consult a dictionary.
• Bruce and Benny faced courts-martial. Silent S
If a word ends in an unpronounced s,
make it plural by ignoring it—don’t add an s, an
apostrophe, or anything else.
• Strangely enough, there were three
François in Mrs. Apple’s class.
