Common Errors

Their, There, and They’re
Mixing up their, there, and they’re is an easy way to make yourself look silly.
Their is a possessive pronoun.
There refers to location.
They’re is a contraction of they are.
• Their love of golf baffles me.
• There they are, heading to the green in their golf cart.
• They’re terrible players, but that doesn’t stop them.
Be careful not to confuse theirs with there’s. And whatever you do, don’t use their’s at all.
Theirs is a possessive pronoun.
There’s is a contraction of there is.
• Is this foot-long sub ours or theirs?
• There’s no excuse for stealing their pickles.
