Dates
Abbreviated Years
When shortening a year to its last two digits, use an apostrophe.
• The class of ’04 loathes the class of ’05.
B.C., A.D., B.C.E., C.E.
The two most common pairs of abbreviations for eras are B.C.(before Christ) and A.D. (anno Domini, in the year of our lord); and B.C.E. (before the common era) and C.E. (common era). SparkNotes puts these abbreviations in small caps and places periods between the letters.
Decades
You may spell out decades or not, according to your preference—just be consistent in your writing.
• Sophie loved the acid-washed jeans of the eighties.
• Sophie loved the teased bangs of the 1980s.
• Sophie loved the jelly shoes of the 80s.
When referring to decades, use s alone, not an apostrophe and an s.
• Braun dreamed of being a flapper in the 1920s.
Centuries
Spell out centuries; do not capitalize them.
• To Olive’s dismay, the next unit is on the eighteenth century.
Commas
If you’re naming a month, day, and year, in that order, include commas after the day and the year.
• On March 1, 2001, Joe was forced to shave his head after losing a bet.
If you’re being pretentious and naming a day, month, and year, in that order, no commas are necessary.
• It was the lecture of 27 January 1999 that really drove Mr. Williams’s class over the edge.
If you’re naming a month and a year, no commas are necessary.
• In June 1950 they embarked on an exploration of the backyard.
Days, Months, Seasons, Holidays
Capitalize days of the week, months, and holidays. Do not capitalize seasons.
• My favorite winter holiday, Christmas, falls on the fourth Wednesday of December this year.
Slashes
Don’t use slashes when noting dates in formal writing.
• On February 14, 2005, Mark brutally rejected Tiana’s valentine.
Stand-Alone Dates
If you’re mentioning a date without attaching it to a month, spell it out.
• Bea circled the sixteenth in red ink.
