deduce: to figure out; to draw a definitive conclusion
• Holmes deduced that his visitor was a bootblack in a mere thirty seconds.
induce: to stimulate; to observe and then make a decent guess
• Dr. Watson induced labor, and the patient gave birth to a healthy girl.
• After Holmes explained his thought process, Watson induced that Holmes always looks at his visitors’ hands and feet.
