Punctuation

Ellipses
An ellipsis consists of three points separated by spaces. It is used to indicate omission (elision) or hesitation.
Speech
Use ellipses to indicate confused or worried pauses in speech.
• “But . . . if . . . I just don’t understand!”
• “So you . . . you cheated on me with my best friend?”
Also use ellipses to indicate trailing off.
• “Oh, perhaps . . . ,” Angus said, staring at the meadow.
To indicate a firm interruption in dialogue, a dash is used instead. For more on this, see Dialogue.
Quotations
Use ellipses to indicate omitted dialogue. For detailed instructions, see Quotations.
