Punctuation

Exclamation Points
Exclamations points indicate strong emotion, like surprise, anger, and urgency.
With Question Marks
We don’t recommend combining exclamation points with question marks, even if you want to indicate strong emotion. Instead, choose whichever mark is more appropriate.
Excessive: Are you kidding me?!
Better: Are you kidding me?
Excessive: I’m in total shock!?
Better: I’m in total shock!

Exclamation points should be used sparingly—even in emails. Writing filled with exclamation points sounds either hysterical or ditzy.

With Quotations
If exclamation points are part of quoted material, they should be included inside the quotation marks. If they are not part of the quoted material, they should be placed outside the quotation marks.
• That liar Brianna just told me she “would never do that”!
• “I would never do that!” Brianna cried.
