The Latin term ibid., an abbreviation
for ibidem (“in the same place”), is used in scholarly
texts to cite the same source more than once consecutively. Traditionally,
it has appeared in italics, but this is no longer
necessary.
• During his only scene alone with Ophelia,
Hamlet mocks her, verbally abuses her, and ultimately chases her
away (Shakespeare, Hamlet, III.i.92–149). None of
these prevent him from proclaiming, at her funeral, to have loved
her more than “forty thousand brothers” (ibid., V.i.255).
