We know what you’re thinking: “SparkLife mixes are supposed to be fun, or useful, or educational. The last thing most high school students need in their lives is more ‘awkward.'”
No, SparkLife did not become a sadistic media provider overnight. This particular playlist was inspired by Sparkler blargie421, who commented that one of our previous mixes made her “feel awkward.” Which at first made us feel awkward for posting it. But then we started to think: What songs make us feel awkward?
First we found this, a track by independent artist Josh Houde, and the perfect trifecta of awkward: Awkward song, awkward video, and the word “awkward” in the title.
Then we found this live version of The Used’s “Pretty Handsome Awkward.” It’s actually not a very awkward song per se. But then our minds wandered and we thought, what if Josh Houde toured with The Used as an opening act? Not compatible! Awkward for everyone!
On that awkward note, here are few other more awkward-inducing tunes:
Okay, we could have just said, all Bright Eyes songs. Conor Oberst’s shaky near-tears voice makes us worry constantly about his emotional state. Awkward for him. Awkward for us.
“Sir Track” Liam Lynch
A song with lyrics like “I named my pager/isn’t that cute?/you should, too/so what’s your pager’s name?/I’M WAITING!” is guaranteed to make you feel a little awkward. Just look at the girl in this homemade video.
We don’t mind the song so much, but aren’t these guys supposed to be singing about world peace? When 49-year-old Bono declares that he doesn’t “want to talk about wars between nations” and begins to croon instead about “foxy boots,” we begin to feel awkward. Mid-life-crises do that to us.
Our top choice of songs that make you feel awkward when they come on in the car… and your parents start to sing along. Loudly. As you and your friend avoid eye contact in the back seat. Runner-up in this category: “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot.
Insanely catchy, and not awkward on its own. But it sure can make you feel awkward when the girl you thought you were dating seriously hears this come on in a club and races to the dance floor, arms raised, high-fiving her friends.
