Incredible Harry Potter Fan Video “The Greater Good” Brings Us Young Dumbledore and Young Grindewald and a Mad Wand Fight

A lot of us watched the credits roll out on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 thinking THIS IS NOT ENOUGH! WE WANT MORE MOVIES! Tell us about the Marauders! Tell us about Dumbledore’s childhood! Remake all the movies from Snape’s perspective! SHOW US YOUNG, SWASHBUCKLING ALBUS DUMBLEDORE!

Well, while we all wait for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to be released as a film, we can watch this 20-minute short fan movie, “The Greater Good,” which tells the story of the three Dumbledore siblings—Albus, Aberforth, and Ariana—and their final meeting with Gellert Grindelwald. Gellert, you will recall from History of the Dark Arts, was a dark wizard who planned to find the Deathly Hallows with Albus and lead a wizarding revolution, but wound up in Nurmengard. The opportunity to see young Ariana, entrusted at the time to Albus, really floats our candles, and explains why poor old Aberforth wound up pulling butterbeers in Hogsmeade. This is some DARK STUFF, half-bloods. Drink it up:

The first thing you’ll notice is that the production values are incredible. Seriously, this looks like Warner Bros. could have made it. You’ll see familiar spells like Petrificus Totalus, hear Grindelwald delicately roll his “R”s as he casts the Cruciatus Curse, and watch as Dumbledore and Grindelwald go wand to wand the same way that Harry matched his magic power to Voldemort’s at the end of Deathly Hallows. There is also a three-way duel (a truel?) with Albus and Aberforth and Gellert that will set your hair on its tweed-vested end, as Ariana hides nearby, emerging to reveal her incredible, if uncontrollable, powers. YOU SEE HOW IMPORTANT SHE IS TO THE STORY OF TOM RIDDLE?

The acting is equally top-notch, and we’re not just saying that because the three actors playing Albus, Aberforth, and Gellert are total dreamboats. (They are Christopher James Cramer, Josh Brodis, and Colin Goodridge, respectively—and aren’t those names that would sound perfect on a Hollywood red carpet?) Kari Swanson as the strong but fragile Ariana rounds out the cast, and since most of us know what’s coming, be prepared to have a stack of tissues ready as you watch (*expelliarmus tears*).

Here is a snap of the very action-packed wand-fight—IT IS A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED VEST-RIPPER.

Watch the video, tell us what you thought, obsessively chronicle the details you noticed, and then check out the Broad Strokes YouTube channel to learn more about “The Greater Good” as well as their next project, “Severus Snape and the Marauders.” (YAAASSSSSS!)
