Is there any one word which can produce such a variety of reactions in high school students? (Okay, maybe “Bieber.”) Whether you think prom is the magical culmination of social striving or a ridiculous game of dress-up, chances are you’re reading this because at least some part of you wants to go. Which leaves you with a pressing question: what should you wear? Don’t worry; we’re here to help guide you to that perfect dress (or not-dress).

1. As a child, you wanted to be a

A. princess

B. sorceress

C. warrior

D. dinosaur

2. How much are you looking forward to prom?

A. This is the moment to which my entire life has been building.

B. Meh, it could be fun.

C. I haven’t even fully decided whether I’m going or not.

D. I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone’s faces when I show up.

3. Who is your favorite Disney Princess?

A. Ariel

B. Belle

C. Merida

D. That one monkey in The Jungle Book who won’t stop whistling. (It could be a princess!)

4. What’s your biggest prom fear?

A. Someone having the same dress as you.

B. Spending way too much money.

C. Being mistaken for someone who gives a crap.

D. Getting kicked out before you can release your glitter bomb.

6. What’s your favorite color?

A. Rose Quartz.

B. Blue?

C. Black.

D. You know when there is an oil slick on water and it is all sort of shimmery? That.

5. Your odds of getting on prom court are:

A. It’s a lock.

B. It’s a long shot.

C. They couldn’t pay you to do that (well they could, but it would have to be a lot).

D. You might not be “elected” to prom court, but you are definitely getting on that stage.

6. If this were the Yule Ball, who would you ask?

A. Cedric

B. Harry

C. Fred/George

D. Luna

7. Your post-prom plans are

A. One party, but you are leaving before the cops come.

B. You are really banking on the afterparty being more fun than the actual event.

C. Laughing about it with your friends.

D. Something involving fire.

8. After prom, you hope they say

A. that you were the most beautiful one there.

B. that you were the best dancer on the floor.

C. “I can’t believe you showed up!”

D. That they are definitely not going to let us have prom next year.

So what should your prom outfit be?

Mostly As: Glam It Up: Look, this is your moment, and you deserve to shine. So get to the weird formalwear store in the mall and pick out a gown replete with lace and sequins. Prom only comes once (at most twice) and you should milk it for all it’s worth.

Mostly Bs: Make An Understatement: You want to look good, you just don’t want to look like you’re competing for Miss America. So pick out something simple and classy, and remember the crucial question: will I wear this again?

Mostly Cs: Grunge Match: Look, there will always be at least one person who shows up to prom in jeans and a t-shirt, and it might as well be you. It’s subversive, there’s nothing on TV that night, and when else will you get to learn that the guy from your chemistry class can break dance?

Mostly Ds: Nuclear Butterfly: Don’t just dress to the nines, dress to the SEVENTEENS. You’re a free spirit and you have your own definition of beauty, so if you show up in a life-size Polar Bear outfit with a built-in bubble gun, it’s not like they’re going to kick you out. (Actually they might, so know your entrances and exits.) Whatever else happens, it’s going to be a memorable night.

So go on, tell your old editors what you’re wearing for the big night.

Prom.
