If you are a) a fan of curious podcasts like Welcome to Night Vale \u00a0<\/em>or \u00a0The Message<\/em>, b) sympathetic to talking drum machines<\/a>, or c) can’t stop buying \u00a0ukuleles, you \\need\/ to check out \u00a0Songonauts<\/a><\/em>, the funny, catchy podcast from Jonathan Mann and Jonathan Mitchell \u00a0(a real quiver of Jonathans).<\/p>\n In the pilot episode, which you can listen to on The Truth<\/a><\/em> podcast (via iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp, Spotify, Soundcloud etc.), Doc<\/strong>, Penny<\/strong>, and JoJo<\/strong> are looking for a new drummer \u00a0for their garage band, and instead find themselves in possession of a drum machine that mysteriously arrives at the door. The drum machine turns itself on, the music gets very Of Montreal<\/a>, and things turn \u00a0veeeery funky when the band find themselves transported into their own songs and facing off against the imminent threat of Obscurity…<\/p>\n My thoughts after listening to the first episode are:<\/p>\n a) these guys know what it’s like to \u00a0get ~lost in a song~ (same, guys, when I listen to Ed Sheeran),<\/p>\n b) the music is excellent, which surprises me 0% because it’s all written by Jonathan “Song a Day” Mann<\/a>, the YouTube star (he has a whole album of Harry Potter<\/em> songs<\/a>!!1!) and member of SparkNotes’ extended fam,<\/p>\n c) I used to judge bands with drum machines, but now I don’t (especially after rewatching Labyrinth<\/a> \u00a0<\/em>recently),<\/p>\n d) you can never have too many ukuleles, and<\/p>\n e) Buzzkill (you’ll find out who \u00a0Buzzfill is) is *everything* I have spent my life trying to defeat.<\/p>\n Also, how long do we have to wait until the next episode?!!!<\/p>\n For now, catch episode one here<\/a>, and watch a supercut of the Songonauts official theme song below.<\/p>\n
