{"id":1391828,"date":"2016-08-10T11:00:56","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T15:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/community.sparknotes.com\/?p=1391828"},"modified":"2016-08-10T10:14:02","modified_gmt":"2016-08-10T14:14:02","slug":"if-books-were-bands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/blog\/if-books-were-bands\/","title":{"rendered":"If Books Were Bands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/booksbandscover1_LargeWide.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Any hardcore \u00a0fan of The Doors knows that the band got its name \u00a0from Aldous Huxley&#8217;s book <em>The Doors of Perception. <\/em>If I had a shred of \u00a0musical talent, there is a great chance that I&#8217;d follow in the footsteps of Modest Mouse, Belle &amp; Sebastian, Titus Andronicus, and Meatloaf (jkkkk) and name my hypothetical band after an awesome book.<\/p>\n<p>Below, I speculate about what seven books would look and sound like if they were leather-pants-clad musicians battling it out for a spot at Glastonbury instead books gunning for a Pulitzer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Perks of Being a Wallflower &#8211; <\/strong>Every high school seems to have its own species of teenage angst band. \u00a0You know, the one with the lead singer in desperate need of an appointment at the barber because can he even \u00a0<em>see<\/em> through the hair over his eyelids? They&#8217;re likely to be found playing Radiohead covers or <em>Asleep<\/em> by The Smiths, over and over and over&#8230; and over again. Some say the bass guitar player sort of looks like Hermione. Parents think they&#8217;re bad news and wonder \u00a0whether they should let \u00a0their kids prance off to \u00a0PoBaW&#8217;s \u00a0gigs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fault in Our Stars &#8211; <\/strong>is the name of the YouTube channel of \u00a0the girl who sings in her room with her acoustic guitar. The beauty of her voice gives your throat that lumpy crying feel \u00a0for minutes on end, but you hold it in so that \u00a0your messy sobs don&#8217;t interfere with her heavenly singing. Especially with that <em>Moon River<\/em> cover. Ooooof. \u00a0She&#8217;s had a tough time in life so far, but music has allowed her to get through it all, and you can feel that within the first second of her melancholic single, &#8220;I&#8217;m All Out of Hair Dye.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Animal Farm &#8211; <\/strong>They&#8217;re as good an \u00a0acappella group as you can get. According to the tenors, \u00a0when the group started they worked in a very egalitarian and democratic fashion, which was the secret behind their perfect coordination \u00a0of harmonies. But lately \u00a0there&#8217;s been some authoritarian behavior spotted from the baritones that has escalated quickly. No news on what this means for the future of barbershop melodies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Outsiders \u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; This is the name of a \u00a0Tribe Called Quest-style hip-hop \u00a0group. When they formed in high school, they were \u00a0known to gather huge crowds during recess. You&#8217;d \u00a0see their name Sharpie-d all \u00a0over desks and lockers, giving the \u00a0crew \u00a0a bad reputation \u00a0among \u00a0the school&#8217;s teachers. Once they graduated, their album took off \u00a0(it didn&#8217;t hurt that Chance the Rapper once retweeted their SoundCloud link).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants &#8211; \u00a0<\/strong>If Destiny&#8217;s Child had a child (Destiny&#8217;s Grandchild?) with the Spice Girls, and that child had a child with Bananarama, not only would you \u00a0get the most amazing family tree ever, but also this explosion of a girl band. They&#8217;re four charmingly coordinated pop singers that have unparalleled taste in spandex and denim. Rumor \u00a0had it last summer that someone \u00a0might \u00a0pull a Zayn\u2014one wanted to move to Greece and another \u00a0started to think that soccer was her true calling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Unbearable Lightness of Being &#8211; \u00a0<\/strong>This indie folk act, much like Bon Iver, is known for their inspirational lyrics\u2014the kind you want to tattoo onto your forearm in a triangle. They&#8217;re also immensely quotable whenever you&#8217;re having \u00a0deep conversations (about liberty, Nietzsche, the USSR. You know, \u00a0important stuff)<em>. \u00a0<\/em>Your best friend, an all-out fangirl of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, mocks your intellectual defense of what she calls &#8220;those Fleet Foxes wannabes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/img.sparknotes.com\/content\/sparklife\/sparktalk\/ifbookswerebands_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lord of the Flies &#8211; \u00a0<\/strong>When you&#8217;re sort of mad at the universe and want people to think that you shouldn&#8217;t be messed with, you turn up Lord of the Flies songs at max volume.
