It didn&#8217;t go well.<\/p>\n<p>Find every installment <a href=\"http:\/\/community.sparknotes.com\/tag\/scarlet-letter-2016\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chapter 13: Another View of Hester<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pearl is seven now, so she&#8217;s at peak cheekiness. Since Pearl was born, \u00a0Hester has devoted \u00a0her life to charity: she brings food and clothing to the poor even though she is poor herself, she nurses the sick back to health even if they continue to \u00a0call her a hussy, she never fights or asks for sympathy. In fact,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Such helpfulness was found in her,\u2014so much power to do, and power to sympathize,\u2014that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman&#8217;s strength.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I think I just felt \u00a0my ovaries high-five each other.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, Hester doesn&#8217;t care what the town thinks. She&#8217;s really come \u00a0into her own at this point and I&#8217;m proud of her. I mean, <em>you<\/em> \u00a0try dealing with \u00a0a kid, a career, a steady \u00a0flow of \u00a0condescension from \u00a0the patriarchy, a secret husband with malice in his heart, a lover who&#8217;s slowly crumpling \u00a0from the inside out, and the vague but constant \u00a0threat of being burned at the stake <a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/catastrophe-amazon-xThuWolVOmmLW3Hea4\" target=\"_blank\">all at once.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In her solitude over the years, she&#8217;s \u00a0had a lot of time to think \u00a0about how to \u00a0singlehandedly destroy the patriarchy. I mean not actually, but pretty close. She&#8217;s taking &#8220;quiet and brooding&#8221; to a whole new level (if you are a \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2015-04\/29\/17\/enhanced\/webdr02\/anigif_enhanced-buzz-20572-1430341705-16_preview.gif\" target=\"_blank\">Mia Thermopolis<\/a> \u00a0on the outside but \u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/thechive.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/01\/4-tumblr_ncaalakygl1rrq6yfo1_50012.jpg?quality=85&amp;strip=info\" target=\"_blank\">Carl Sagan<\/a> on the inside, this one&#8217;s for you):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>It is remarkable, that persons who speculate the most boldly often conform with the most perfect quietude to the external regulations of society&#8230; So it seemed to be with Hester.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This seems like a good time to deliver \u00a0<em>Six \u00a0Direct Quotes That Are Also Statements About Being a Woman in Today&#8217;s Society<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;Everything was against her. The world was hostile<em>.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0&gt; \u00a0Mhm.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Her matronly frame was trodden under all men&#8217;s feet.&#8221;<em> \u00a0<\/em>&gt; This is from a previous chapter but I needed to bring it up \u00a0again because: mhm.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;As a first step, the whole system of society is to be torn down, and built up anew. Then, the very nature of the opposite sex, or its long hereditary habit, which has become like nature, is to be essentially modified, before woman can be allowed to assume what seems a fair and suitable position.&#8221; &gt; Why has this yet to happen \u00a0150 years after it was written tho?<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;At times, a fearful doubt strove to possess her soul.&#8221; &gt; \u00a0How I feel when I can sense someone is about to mansplain.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;There was wild and ghastly scenery all around her, and a home and comfort nowhere.&#8221; &gt; How I feel while being mansplained to.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;She discerns, it may be, a hopeless task before her.&#8221;<em> \u00a0<\/em>&gt; \u00a0How I feel when I try to explain \u00a0to said person the way in which \u00a0they are mansplaining.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/11RIDouEyKZ116\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/reaction-seriously-facepalm-11RIDouEyKZ116\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway. Hester is angry at \u00a0Chillingworth for \u00a0being a royal pain the butt to everyone, especially Dimmesdale. Fortunately, the last seven years have hardened \u00a0her in the best way possible: she feels \u00a0&#8220;no longer so inadequate to cope with Roger Chillingworth&#8221; \u00a0because she knows he&#8217;s stooped several leagues \u00a0below her level with his revenge plot.<\/p>\n<p>She adds to her planner, \u00a0<em>-Meet w\/ Roger, strike power pose and tell him to back off Dimmesdale or face \u00a0the \u00a0wrath of a witch \u00a0with an agenda.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chapter 14: Hester and the Physician<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The length of chapter feels unnecessary, so I&#8217;ll paraphrase:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hester<\/strong>: You&#8217;re stressing me out<br \/>\n<strong>Chillingworth<\/strong>: Yes<br \/>\n<strong>Hester<\/strong>: Can you please cut it out with the long-con on Dimmesdale<br \/>\n<strong>Chillingworth<\/strong>: No<br \/>\n<strong>Hester<\/strong>: If you don&#8217;t tell him, I will<br \/>\n<strong>Chillingworth<\/strong>: Whatever \u00a0I&#8217;m 80% sure the devil has consumed my soul<br \/>\n<strong>Hester<\/strong>: What?<br \/>\n<strong>Chillingworth<\/strong>: Nothing<\/p>\n<p>Hester resolves to give Dimmesdale a heads up, but I \u00a0feel it&#8217;s a little late for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chapter 15: Hester and Pearl<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Hester and Chillingworth are \u00a0chatting, Pearl occupies \u00a0herself with things like \u00a0laying jellyfish out to melt in the sun and displaying \u00a0&#8220;remarkable dexterity&#8221; in pelting birds with her apron full of pebbles.<\/p>\n<p>Later, when she&#8217;s making herself a scarf out of seaweed, she decides to use some extra bits to fashion a small green \u00a0<em>A <\/em>in the hopes that she will \u00a0get a reaction out of her mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hester<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/rGDHqBXTeudTG\" width=\"480\" height=\"384\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/stephen-colbert-the-report-ellen-page-rGDHqBXTeudTG\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Success!<\/p>\n<p>She asks Pearl if she knows what her scarlet letter means. \u00a0Pearl says she doesn&#8217;t, but wants to know if it&#8217;s the same reason Reverend Dimmesdale keeps his hand over his heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hester<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/l46Cbqvg6gxGvh2PS\" width=\"480\" height=\"330\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/originals-retro-l46Cbqvg6gxGvh2PS\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rest of the chapter is H&#8217;s \u00a0inner monologue\u2014does \u00a0Pearl actually know the meaning of the scarlet letter? Does she know Dimmesdale is her father? If she&#8217;s bluffing, should Hester \u00a0tell her?
