Overview
Written by the French playwright Molière, The Misanthrope is a comedy of manners that was first performed in 1666
. The play is a searching comic study of falsity, shallowness, and self-righteousness through the character of Alceste, a man whose conscience and sincerity are too rigorous for his time. The Misanthrope is a comedy and a satire, but it is neither a typical nor simple one. In addition to the abundant humor, Molière has given us a play that deftly reflects and comments on human emotions and relationships.
