Overview

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, an American volunteer in the International Brigades fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and his involvement in a mission to destroy a bridge behind enemy lines. The novel is based on Hemingway’s own experiences as a war correspondent during the Spanish Civil War and was inspired by his time in Spain covering the conflict for the North American Newspaper Alliance.
