Overview

The Women of Brewster Place is American author Gloria Naylor’s debut novel that was first published in 1982. The novel interweaves the stories of seven Black women living in an inner-city tenement called Brewster Place that is also their sanctuary as it poignantly captures their struggles, strengths, and hopes. Naylor’s first novel won the First Novel category of the National Book Award and was adapted into a 1989 miniseries named The Women of Brewster Place and a 1990 television show produced by Oprah Winfrey called Brewster Place
