On Christmas Eve, Eleanor and her family receive an annual Christmas box of fruit from Eleanor’s uncle, plus, this year, a letter inviting Eleanor to visit for the summer and attend a camp for gifted kids. Richie gives Eleanor’s siblings a bunch of Christmas presents, and hands Eleanor a fifty-dollar bill. Eleanor and her mom go to the grocery store for Christmas dinner, and her mom tells her that Eleanor can’t throw tantrums all the time, and that she has to accept Richie. Eleanor gives her mom the fifty-dollar bill, and her mom doesn’t thank her for it.
Park and his mom see Eleanor and her mom in the grocery store. Park wants to say hello, but he doesn’t. When they get home, his mom spends the afternoon crying in her room. Even though his mom almost never talks about her past, that night she gives Park a gift for Eleanor and tells him about how hard it was for her to grow up with a big family and not enough money in Korea. She apologizes for being so hard on Eleanor because she can relate to her. Park runs to Eleanor’s house, taps on her window, and mouths to her to meet him at the elementary school.
When Eleanor meets Park at the school, they immediately start kissing and crying.
On Christmas Day, Eleanor sleeps until noon. Eleanor’s mom says that she can probably convince Richie to let Eleanor go to the camp for gifted kids, but Eleanor says she wants to stay.
On Christmas Day, Park also sleeps until noon. He doesn’t care about getting his license, because all he wants to do is spend time with Eleanor. Park thinks about his conversation with Eleanor the night before, when she told him about all her family, and that Eleanor’s mom won’t leave Richie because she’s too scared and beaten down.
Eleanor’s mom makes a wonderful Christmas dinner. For dessert, she makes her grandmother’s traditional rice pudding. Richie gets extremely angry, because he wanted pumpkin pie. He flings the bowl of rice pudding on the floor and drives off in a huff. When he leaves, Eleanor’s mom serves the pudding to everyone, and they all pretend nothing has happened.
