Overview

Northanger Abbey, published posthumously in 1817, is a novel by Jane Austen that follows the story of Catherine Morland, a young woman who loves reading Gothic novels. Catherine is invited to stay with the Tilney family at their home, Northanger Abbey, and she imagines herself in a Gothic romance. However, she soon learns that real life is not like the novels she loves. Northanger Abbey is a satire of the Gothic novel and a commentary on the importance of reading.
