Identifying themes and their relationships to one another form a foundation for understanding
a work of literature. Shakespeare weaves the theme of dreams and dreaming throughout
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Students will use this worksheet to analyze how this theme
relates to other major themes in the play, including love, marriage, gender, and friendship.
Students will detail how Shakespeare uses character, setting, and plot to develop each
of these themes and how he builds upon each one to create a larger message about the
nature of dreams. Students will then summarize their findings in a paragraph (or longer)
written response.
