Terms
Achiral
-
As opposed to chiral, a term referring to an object that is superimposable
on (identical to) its mirror image.
Chiral
-
An object that is not superimposable on its mirror image; opposite of
achiral.
Cumulated diene (allene)
-
A molecule that contains the motif C=C=C, where the central carbon atom is
attached to two perpendicular Π bonds.
Conformational enantiomers
-
Conformations of a single molecule that are non-superimposable mirror images.
Diastereomer
-
Stereoisomers that are not enantiomers.
Enantiomer
-
Stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images.
Fischer Projection
-
Representation of chirality using a cross, with the horizontal lines
representing bonds coming out of the plane of the page and vertical line
representing bonds going into the plane of the page.
Meso
-
A compound that contains multiple stereocenters but is achiral due to an
internal plane of symmetry.
Stereocenter
-
Short for stereogenic center. A component of a molecule that gives rise
to
stereoisomerism. Often a carbon atom attached to four distinct groups.
